The 90s aesthetic is back for good: baggy jeans, slip dresses, flannel shirts, chunky sneakers, claw clips and brown lip liner never really left. But “90s style” was never just one look. The decade had grunge kids, sleek minimalists, hip-hop and R&B style, and the plaid-skirt preppy look, and today’s 90s aesthetic borrows from all of them.
Feel like you were born in the wrong decade? Our What Era Do You Belong In? quiz has a 1990s result.
What Is the 90s Aesthetic?
At its core, the 90s aesthetic is relaxed, a little rebellious and very denim-heavy. Clothes are looser than in the 2000s, colors are either muted (black, gray, forest green, faded denim) or bold primary tones, and the attitude is “I didn’t try too hard,” even when you did. At home it means posters, CDs, plaid bedding, lava lamps and photos from disposable cameras.
The Four Main 90s Styles
1. Grunge
Born in the Seattle music scene, grunge meant flannel shirts, band tees, ripped jeans, slip dresses layered over tees, cardigans and combat boots. It was deliberately undone: thrifted, layered and a bit moody.
2. 90s Minimalism
The opposite of grunge: sleek slip dresses, simple tank tops, straight-leg jeans, long coats and a mostly black, white and camel palette. Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and the model Kate Moss are the go-to references for this clean, understated side of the decade.
3. Hip-Hop and R&B Style
Baggy jeans, oversized logo sweatshirts, crop tops, bandanas, puffer jackets, sporty sneakers and gold hoops. Artists like TLC and Aaliyah made this mix of streetwear and glamour hugely influential, and it still shapes streetwear today.
4. Preppy and “Clueless” Style
Matching plaid skirt sets, knee-high socks, cardigans, mini backpacks and platform Mary Janes. The 1995 film Clueless turned yellow plaid into one of the most recognizable outfits of the decade.
The 90s Color Palette
Faded denim, flannel red, forest green, mustard, slip-silk beige and washed black. Grunge leans on the darker shades, minimalism on beige and black, and preppy on plaids that combine several of them.

90s Style on a Budget
This is the easiest aesthetic to thrift, because so much of it came from secondhand shops in the first place. Look for real vintage Levi’s, men’s flannel shirts, slip skirts and oversized blazers. Add a claw clip and brown lip liner, and you’re most of the way there.
