How to Make Your Gift Tags
- Print the page on white cardstock (65–80 lb) with “Fit” or “Actual size” turned on.
- Cut along the dashed lines with scissors or a paper trimmer.
- Punch a hole where the small circle is. A standard hole punch works well.
- Thread twine, ribbon or string through the hole and tie the tag onto your gift.
- Write the names in pen or a fine marker, and let the ink dry before stacking.
Wrapping Ideas to Match Your Tags

What to Write on a Christmas Gift Tag
A blank To and From line is easy, but a short message makes a gift feel personal. Here are ideas you can copy for the back of the tag or the space under the names.
Short and Sweet
- Merry Christmas, I love you
- Wrapped with love
- Open me first
- Cozy season is here
- Thinking of you this Christmas
- Hope this makes you smile
For Friends
- You are my favorite person to celebrate with
- You deserve this one
- Open with a hot chocolate in hand
- This one made me think of you
- Thanks for being the best part of my year
Funny and Playful
- Yes, it is exactly what you think it is
- Open me before you start the movie
- No peeking (I can see you looking)
- Do not shake, do not guess
- From someone who spent too long on this wrapping
For Secret Santa
- From your Secret Santa, guess who
- Your Secret Santa thought of you
- Santa’s helper was here
- Secret Santa says: you were on the nice list
If you have not drawn names yet, our free Secret Santa generator gives each person a private link, so nobody sees who has whom until they open it.
Tips for Gift Tags That Stay On
- Use string, not just tape: a hole punch and ribbon or twine survive a trip under the tree and in a car far better than a sticker.
- Write in pen, then let it dry: a smudged name on a tag is easy to avoid, and a gel pen on glossy paper needs a minute to set.
- Add a clue for kids: a small drawing or a color code (red for Mia, green for Leo) helps early readers find their own gifts.
- Match the tag to the gift: a tag in the same design as your wrapping paper looks tidy, while a contrasting tag makes it pop. Both work, so pick one for the whole tree.
- Print extras: the PDF has several tags per page, so print one more sheet than you think you need for last-minute gifts.
Printing Tips
- Pick your paper size. Choose US Letter if you live in the US or Canada, and A4 almost everywhere else.
- Print with “Fit” or “Scale to fit” turned on, so nothing gets cut off at the edges.
- Print only the page you want. The PDF has 5 pages; type the page number into your print settings.
- Use thicker paper (65–80 lb cardstock or 120 gsm) if you want it to last all season on the fridge or a bulletin board.
- No printer? Save the PDF to your phone and take it to any print shop or library.

Christmas Gift Tags FAQ
What paper is best for printable gift tags?
White cardstock between 65 and 80 lb (about 175–215 gsm) is sturdy enough to hang from a ribbon without bending. Regular printer paper works too if you glue the tags onto kraft paper or card.
Can I use the tags without a hole punch?
Yes. Tape the tag flat onto the gift, tuck it under the ribbon, or glue it to the top of the box.
Is this printable really free?
Yes. It’s free for personal use, so print as many copies as you like for your home, your family, your friends or your classroom. Please don’t sell it or upload the PDF somewhere else; share a link to this page instead.
